Dog breeds by size
Size shapes almost everything about life with a dog: how much room it needs, what it eats, the crate it sleeps in and often how long it lives. Furlyo sorts each breed by the middle of its adult weight range in the AKC standard.
| Size | Adult weight | Breeds | Popular examples | Typical crate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Toy | Under 12 lb | 20 | Toy Poodle, Yorkshire Terrier, Pomeranian, Chihuahua and Havanese | 18 to 22 inch |
| Small | 12 to 24 lb | 39 | French Bulldog, Dachshund, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Miniature Schnauzer and Shih Tzu | 24 to 30 inch |
| Medium | 25 to 54 lb | 57 | Beagle, Bulldog, Australian Shepherd, Pembroke Welsh Corgi and Border Collie | 30 to 36 inch |
| Large | 55 to 99 lb | 60 | Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, German Shepherd Dog, Poodle and Rottweiler | 42 to 48 inch |
| Giant | 100 lb and up | 16 | Great Dane, Mastiff, Newfoundland, Akita and Saint Bernard | 48 to 54 inch |
Crate sizes are typical ranges for an adult. For an exact fit, measure your dog and use the dog crate size calculator. Bigger dogs also eat a lot more, and the dog food calculator shows the daily portion for any weight.
Most popular dog breeds in the US
These are the top 20 breeds by AKC registrations in 2025. The French Bulldog held first place for the fourth year in a row, and the Cane Corso climbed to 11th. Registrations only count purebred dogs registered with the AKC, so they show trends rather than every dog in American homes.

Best dog breeds for your lifestyle
A breed that suits one home can be a poor fit for another. The lists below use the AKC's 1 to 5 breed ratings, so each one states the exact rule behind it. Ratings describe what is typical for a breed. Individual dogs vary, and training and socialization matter at least as much as genes.
Families with young children
Rated 5 out of 5 by the AKC for both "good with young children" and "affectionate with family". Most popular first: French Bulldog, Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, German Shepherd Dog, Poodle, Toy Poodle, German Shorthaired Pointer, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Yorkshire Terrier, Doberman Pinscher, Miniature Schnauzer and Bernese Mountain Dog. See all 76 breeds rated 5 for young children in the breed finder
First-time owners who want an easy learner
Rated 5 out of 5 for trainability, meaning they pick up cues quickly and like working with people. Most popular first: Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, German Shepherd Dog, Poodle, Toy Poodle, Rottweiler, German Shorthaired Pointer, Australian Shepherd, Doberman Pinscher, Miniature Schnauzer, Border Collie and English Springer Spaniel.
Owners who want less dog hair
Rated 1 out of 5 for shedding. Low shedding is not the same as allergy-free, as the FAQ below explains. Most popular first: Poodle, Toy Poodle, Yorkshire Terrier, Shih Tzu, Maltese, Bichon Frise, Airedale Terrier, Chinese Crested, Biewer Terrier, Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier, Lhasa Apso and Standard Schnauzer. See all 26 in the breed finder
Apartments and smaller homes
Toy and small breeds rated 4 or 5 out of 5 for adaptability, which covers how well a dog copes with changes in living space and routine. Most popular first: French Bulldog, Dachshund, Toy Poodle, Yorkshire Terrier, Miniature Schnauzer, Pomeranian, Shih Tzu, Chihuahua, Havanese, Shetland Sheepdog, Maltese and Pug.
Runners, hikers and very active homes
Rated 5 out of 5 for energy. These dogs need long daily exercise and a job for their brain. Most popular first: Labrador Retriever, German Shepherd Dog, German Shorthaired Pointer, Australian Shepherd, Doberman Pinscher, Border Collie, Siberian Husky, Brittany, Vizsla, Portuguese Water Dog, Australian Cattle Dog and Wirehaired Pointing Griffon. See all 32 in the breed finder
A calmer, lower-energy companion
Rated 3 or lower out of 5 for energy. Even calm breeds need daily walks and play. Most popular first: French Bulldog, Golden Retriever, Dachshund, Rottweiler, Bulldog, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Miniature Schnauzer, Pomeranian, Shih Tzu, Havanese, Basset Hound and English Cocker Spaniel. See all 80 in the breed finder
Quiet homes and close neighbors
Rated 1 out of 5 for barking. Every dog barks sometimes, but these breeds rarely make a habit of it. Most popular first: French Bulldog, Golden Retriever, Rottweiler, Pug, Mastiff, Newfoundland, Australian Cattle Dog, Whippet, Saint Bernard, Irish Wolfhound, Bullmastiff and Pekingese.
Homes with other dogs
Rated 5 out of 5 for getting along with other dogs. Introduce new dogs slowly, whatever the breed. Most popular first: Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, Beagle, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Bernese Mountain Dog, Shih Tzu, Havanese, Shetland Sheepdog, Siberian Husky, Cocker Spaniel, Basset Hound and English Cocker Spaniel.
Biggest, smallest and longest-living breeds
- Heaviest: Mastiff (120-230 lb); Boerboel (150-200 lb); Saint Bernard (120-180 lb); Great Dane (110-175 lb).
- Tallest: the Irish Wolfhound (males at least 32 inches, per the AKC), followed by the Great Dane and the Scottish Deerhound (males 30 to 32 inches).
- Smallest: Chihuahua (Up to 6 lb); Toy Poodle (4-6 lb); Maltese (Under 7 lb); Pomeranian (3-7 lb).
- Longest life expectancy: Pyrenean Shepherd (17-19 yrs); Biewer Terrier (16 yrs); Manchester Terrier (15-17 yrs); Chinese Crested (13-18 yrs); Cirneco dell'Etna (15-16 yrs); Tibetan Terrier (15-16 yrs).
Life expectancy ranges come from the breed standards and breed clubs, and real dogs often fall outside them. Large studies of veterinary records, such as the VetCompass work from the Royal Veterinary College, find the same overall pattern: small breeds tend to outlive giant ones.
How to choose the right dog breed
- Start with space and size. Measure where the dog will sleep and travel. A Great Dane needs a 54 inch crate and a car to match, while a Toy Poodle fits under an airline seat.
- Match energy to your week. High energy breeds need an hour or more of hard exercise a day. If your schedule is packed, filter the breed finder for calm to moderate energy.
- Be honest about grooming. Low-shedding coats like the Poodle's need regular clipping, and double coats like the Siberian Husky's shed heavily twice a year.
- Budget for food and care. Food costs grow with size. The dog calorie calculator and the breed feeding charts, such as the Golden Retriever feeding chart, show what a dog really eats.
- Read up on breed health. Every Furlyo breed guide covers the conditions that breed is prone to and the health tests a good breeder should show you.
- Meet the dog, not just the breed. Visit breeders or breed rescues, meet the parents where you can, and ask about temperament. Shelters also hold many purebred and mixed breed dogs.
Purebred, crossbreed or mixed breed?
A purebred dog comes from parents of the same registered breed, so its adult size and temperament are fairly predictable. Crossbreeds such as the Goldendoodle and the Labradoodle mix two breeds on purpose and are not recognized by the AKC, so size and coat can vary a lot even within one litter. Mixed breed dogs of unknown ancestry are the least predictable and often the easiest to find in shelters. For any of them, look at the parents, or at the dog in front of you, rather than a label.
Dog breed FAQ
How many dog breeds are there?
There is no single number, because each kennel club keeps its own list. The AKC has recognized 205 breeds, 202 of which appear in its 2025 registration statistics, and the FCI, the international federation of kennel clubs, recognizes more than 350. This page covers the 192 breeds that have a full Furlyo guide.
What are the 7 AKC dog breed groups?
Sporting, Hound, Working, Terrier, Toy, Non-Sporting and Herding. Breeds that are still working toward full recognition sit in the Miscellaneous Class until they join a group.
What is the most popular dog breed?
The French Bulldog. It topped the AKC ranking for the fourth year in a row in 2025, ahead of the Labrador Retriever, the Golden Retriever and the German Shepherd Dog.
Are any dog breeds hypoallergenic?
No breed is truly allergen-free. A 2012 study in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology measured the main dog allergen, Can f 1, in homes and found no evidence that so-called hypoallergenic breeds have lower levels. Low-shedding breeds such as the Poodle, the Bichon Frise and the Maltese leave less hair around, which some people with mild allergies find easier to live with.
What is the biggest dog breed?
By weight it is the Mastiff, with males weighing up to 230 pounds in the AKC standard. By height it is the Irish Wolfhound, whose males stand at least 32 inches at the shoulder, with the Great Dane close behind.
Which dog breeds live the longest?
Small breeds generally live longest. Among the breeds on this page, the Pyrenean Shepherd has the highest AKC life expectancy at 17 to 19 years, and the Afghan Hound, the Chinese Crested, the Xoloitzcuintli and the Toy Poodle all have upper estimates of 18 years. Breed averages are a guide only, since diet, weight and care decide much of an individual dog's life span.
How is breed size decided on this page?
Each breed is sorted by the middle of its adult weight range in the AKC standard: toy under 12 pounds, small 12 to 24, medium 25 to 54, large 55 to 99 and giant 100 pounds and up. Breeds that come in several varieties, such as the Xoloitzcuintli, appear under each size they cover.

Where the breed data comes from
Weight, height, life expectancy, origin and group come from the official AKC breed pages and breed standards, checked in October 2026. The energy, children and shedding scores are the AKC's own 1 to 5 breed ratings. Breeds outside the AKC use the UKC or FCI standard or their breed association. Life spans for the Jack Russell Terrier and American Bulldog come from a 2022 VetCompass study of UK dogs, and are left blank where no reliable figure exists.
